Day 23 (lock down)

Wednesday 15th April - bike ***** - Two Rivers – Orwell to the Deben – Extra Long route including Bluebell woods at Orwell Country Park, Ipswich – Sunny and light airs:)

After yesterdays 17-mile-Long Two Rivers bike ride I didn’t think we would go far toady but woke to perfect cycling weather, lovely and sunny with light airs so decided to head to the outskirts of Ipswich to see the Bluebells in the woods at Orwell Country Park. Due to the distance involved we took a flask and a couple of savoury muffins and left home at 7.30 when you defiantly needed gloves as we spotted frost by Felixstowe cemetery! On reaching Cordys Lane there was a whiff in the air with the culprit being a much spreader in the fields! We took our favourite tree lined path down to Loompit Lake seeing the deer again. It was a pinch yourself moment when we reached the River Orwell which was mirror calm and with the tide on the way out and lots of exposed mud there were loads of birds. Again there was a small bird catching flies by Loompit Lake, which then laid on the ground so I managed to get a pic, at first we thought it was a Lesser Flycatcher but on getting home discovered it wasn’t, I posted a pic on Suffolk Birds on Facebook and people said it was a Pied or Yellow wagtail, we are not sure of that??? We passed through Levington Marina always good for some reflective shots and out onto the very bumpy river path towards the creek with the rape on the far bank turning the river yellow, just stunning! As it was very quiet, we continued on the river path up into the woods which were full of bluebells and white shirt buttons:) Then down to Nacton Shores where we stopped for our very welcome flask and muffin watching the geese etc in the river as the water dropped! It’s back onto the country lanes now through Nacton to Ipswich and down to Orwell Country Park to enjoy the Bluebells in the lovely spring sunshine, you just can’t believe the world is in the middle of this terrible crisis when you are surrounded by this peaceful beauty! We take a few minutes to make the most of the fantastic nature as Mag spots a Muntjac deer. We walk through the bluebell woods and then continue through the closed retail park coming out at a busy Sainsbury. We then turn up by the end of the Suffolk Show ground for Bucklesham hoping to spot some hares! The narrow country lanes are very quiet expect for farm workers in the fields and we manage to see a couple of hare chasing each other about in a recently prepared potato field:) The ride is going so well we decide to continue on to Falkenham and down to Kings Fleet where the gravel farm track takes its toll on our tired legs but we do see a Marsh Harrier! Up on the River Deben path we soon reach Felixstowe Ferry, then up onto the coast path past the golf course and home through the town. In the end we covered over 28 miles enjoying the very best that Suffolk has to offer and are soon tucking into tuna sandwiches in the garden. We will probably have a down day tomorrow in the garden as the weather is supposed to be good again as Mags works herself to the weekly trip to Lidl!!!
